In Solidarity with Imprisoned WMW Activists in Turkey, African Regional Meeting and Indigenous People’s Summit

URGENT APPEAL FROM THE WMW SISTERS IN TURKEY

In the last week of May, 35 trade unionists in Turkey were taken into custody illegally (including WMW activists). Authorities have confiscated documents, including those related to maternal leave, violence against women, and sexual harassment as well as the WMW Action Plan for 2010, the accumulation of 12 years of women’s work. The Turkish sisters have asked us to send a letter of repudiation - urgently - to the Turkish authorities.

Click to read the email sent by the Turkish NCB as well as the solidarity appeal.

WMW African Meeting

The African Regional Meeting ended on the 30th May with a public demonstration in Bamako, Mali. Around 50 women, from 25 countries, took part in the meeting, whose aims were to debate, exchange and organise the 2010 International Action, as well as to strengthen the WMW in Africa. Read interviews and other news from the meeting (in French only) on the website: http://genre.francophonie.org/

Indigenous Women’s Summit

The I Indigenous Women’s Summit (I Cumbre de Mujeres Indígenas) was held in Puno, Peru, from the 27th to 31st May, in the framework of the IV Hemispheric Summit of Indigenous Peoples and Nationalities of the Abya Ayala (Great America). Among the decisions made at the summit is the creation of the Hemispheric Coordination of Indigenous People’s Organisations, and the definition of the next country to hold the Hemispheric Summit in 2011 – Bolivia.  The global mobilisation in defence of the Mother Earth, from the 12th to 16th October 2009, was also given priority.

The final declaration of the women’s summit (in Spanish only) can be read by clicking on the link: http://www.movimientos.org/enlacei/iv-cumbre-indigena/show_text.php3?key=14473.
