Action at All Levels

The World March of Women adopted 11 international demands for eliminating violence against women. Women of the March saw these demands as forming part of the wider struggle to force all political powers to respect human rights. The demands include: ratification of international agreements addressing women's rights (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and so on), the adoption of additional Protocols, implementation of application mechanisms for the 1949 Convention for the Suppression of the Trafficking in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, recognition of the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, and the right to asylum for women victims of sexist discrimination, persecution and violence. |
A woman from Burkina Faso demands that measures be taken to curb violence against women. |
Two demands affirm "that a person's sexual orientation shall not bar them from the full exercise of the rights set out in the various instruments [of international law]." These two demands elicited strong reactions in many countries; a number of women's groups decided not to support them because of the intense taboo regarding this issue in their countries.
Violence against women is multifaceted. It springs from an imposed hierarchy of men over women that is reflected in the political structures of countries. Violence against women engenders discrimination and inequality, both on the law books and in everyday life.
It is both intimate and systemic; its expression is diverse (physical, psychological, sexual, verbal, etc.); and it permeates behaviour and imagery, everyday conversation, legislation, the media, and school textbooks.
The World March of Women denounces all forms of violence against women.
