Shelter, Counselling, Support

A victory for women in Chile was the government's announcement on October 14, 2000, the day of their national march, of the creation of nine centres for battered women.

Other concrete proposals regarding assistance for women victims of sexist violence included the creation of shelters like these, appropriate medical and psychological support, and women police officers (Brazil, Congo Brazzaville, Europe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India).

Drawing that appeared in "Todos contra a violência,"
published by Forum Mulher,
Mozambique, August 2000.

In Honduras, Britain and Québec, women called for a national public awareness-raising campaign on violence against women. Belgian women demanded that "the consequences of male violence on women's health be taken seriously and compensated through health insurance and psychological assistance."

Canadian women demanded adequate financial support for rape crisis centres and assistance for women seeking recourse through the justice system. They demanded legal reform so that attackers may not use the "defence of provocation " (justify their violence by claiming that women provoked them). They also demanded measures to combat all forms of discrimination.
