Women's Marching Feet Echo around the World

The Thai March campaign was directed mainly at women workers and slum dwellers. A total of 11,000 signatures were collected. Some 50 discussion groups were organized on the subject of the world demands. On October 11, 2000, March representatives presented their demands to the person in charge of the Women in Development section of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, while 250 demonstrators looked on.

Theatre, singing and poetry marked the launch of the March on March 8, 2000, in Karachi and across the country. The cornerstone of the women's demands was their participation in the Pakistani economy. A survey on the situation of domestic workers was done on July 22 of that year. In 2001, March representatives took part in a general discussion on women's situation. In 2002, they will encourage women to participate in democratic elections.

SRI LANKA

Rural women in Sri Lanka mobilized against wife assault. "Make every household a peaceful one" was one of their demands. Women's networks decided to continue staging actions in 2001 around peace. They also resolved to participate in regional meetings on torture and to fight to increase women's strength and power.

Poverty and violence stem from economic neoliberalism and patriarchy, Korean women asserted. They demanded measures against sexual abuse; sex trafficking in women; rape, in particular, rape committed by U.S. soldiers and rape during wartime; and against the preferential treatment of sons in inheritance practices. They called for special programs for women living in poverty.

AUSTRALIA

Australian women organized festivals in several cities in October 2000. Workshops and conferences, led by large coalitions bringing together very diverse groups, were held throughout the year. Women demanded that the government issue an apology to the Stolen Generation, the generation of Aboriginal people whom white settlers dispossessed of their land and almost half their children, sent to live in white homes. |
