To the women from social and civil organisations in Mexico
In response to the systematic violence against women that continues with permission from the Mexican State, women’s networks understand the necessity of an alliance that mobilises us to exercise our full citizenship and struggle to change this situation. This is due to the fact that this violence is not just a result of a misogynist culture, but also of a neoliberal and patriarchal economic system that controls the people with one aim: to maximise profit for the elites of the economic power at the cost of impoverishing women and the people, transforming into merchandise human rights. In order to achieve their aims, the federal government uses force, not only by those institutions responsible for public security, but also the current use of the military apparatus in city and village streets, in this way risking citizen safety and increasing the repression and criminalisation of popular protest that also includes women because they are women.
Examples of the physical, psychological, sexual, economic and institutional force that women and their bodies are subjected to are numerous: the feminicides of the city of Juárez, the case of the indigenous women Ernestina Ascensión in Zongolica, Ver., the women of Castaños, Coahuila, the girls of Carácuaro and Nocupétaro of Michoacán, the indigenous communicators of Oaxaca. We also remember the cases of Atenco in the state of Mexico and those of Guerrero and Chiapas. The media reported 1,088 assassinations of women between June 2007 and June 2008 in 15 state of the Republic. This violence takes place with total IMPUNITY, because the perpetrators are never submitted to justice.
We, from the World March of Women-Mexico, invite you to participate in the Caravan Chihuahua-Chiapas to demand that the responsible authorities guarantee life, freedom and justice for women.
The World March of Women is an international movement of feminist action that began in 1998 to struggle for the rights of women. The movement’s strategic issues continue to be the struggle AGAINST POVERTY AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN.
We are currently carrying out the following agenda in Mexico:
• One Million Signatures campaign (that began in September 2007) to demand the safety of the lives of women.
• The carrying out of the Caravan against violence aginst women which will leave Juárez city, Chihuahua on 24th November, 2008 to reach Chiapas on 1st December.
WE INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CITY OF MÉXICO EN THE MARCH AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE ON 29TH NOVEMBER. WE WILL LEAVE FROM THE ANGEL OF INDEPENDENCE AT 9AM IN ORDER TO ARRIVE AT THE ZOCALO AND END WITH A POLITCO-CULTURAL ACT (don’t forget to take your parasol with slogans).
