Montreal, September 19, 2005 - The World March of Women condemns Pakistan President Pervez Musharaf's remarks about Mukhtara Bibi

In a September 13 interview with the Washington Post, President Musharaf described a young woman's decision to report a gang rape that had been ordered by the elders of her village as a "moneymaking" venture. He said, "A lot of people say if you want to go abroad and obtain a Canadian visa or citizenship, and be a millionaire, all you have to do is get yourself raped."

President Musharaf's remarks are an insult to all women worldwide who are fighting for their dignity, bravely denouncing the violence committed against them, and struggling so that others will not have to suffer the same injustice.

Mukhtara Bibi was sentenced to gang rape in June 2002 because her younger brother had conducted an "illicit relationship" with a young girl of another tribe considered to be superior in the tribal hierarchy. She reported the attack and the rapists were placed on trial, resulting in six convictions. All have since been released.

When she expressed the desire to leave the country, Mukhtara Bibi was placed under house arrest and prohibited from leaving the territory. President Musharaf now claims that the young woman is free.

Act quickly by joining Amnesty International's campaign to denounce violence against women, in particular, the case of Mukhtara Bibi.
