Launch of Women on the March. Focus on the Actions and Demands of the World March of Women

■ ■ ■

Montréal, July, 2002. The World March of Women is pleased to announce its very latest publication, Women on the March. Focus on the Actions and Demands of the World March of Women.

An ambitious document for an ambitious project, the work recounts the main stages of the wondrous adventure of the World March of Women throughout the planet. It is available in English, French and Spanish.

All participating groups in the World March of Women in the Year 2000 will receive a copy of Women on the March between late July and early September 2002. The beautiful volume (64 colour pages), co-published with Les Éditions du remue-ménage, will be on sale in some bookstores and through a distribution network covering all countries.*

In this profusely illustrated report you will find images and text describing the actions women took to make their demands known in their communities, countries and across the globe. It offers a sampling of victories won by some women, and the renewed hopes achieved by others. Two realities at the core of women’s everyday life are denounced: poverty and violence. At the same time, the report shows that global feminist solidarity is possible, despite diverse obstacles, and that it holds the potential for change and hope.

Women on the March reminds us that every day, throughout the world, women fight for the right to vote, access to water, land, health and education; against rape, sexual assault and wife battering; for control of our bodies and sexuality; for equal pay and pay equity.

In short, going beyond the memory of the World March of Women in the Year 2000, this work focusses on the future through the actions, demands, gains and hopes of the women who marched.

Multimedia version of Women on the March

Since technology played such an important role in the organization of the World March of Women, it follows that Women on the March had to be not only accessible on our Web site but also in a multimedia version.

In addition to all the content of the printed version, the multimedia version contains many additional texts and visual elements. It will be added to and improved as we receive more information from participating groups and national coordinating bodies.

A multitude of hyperlinks appear in the text and will lead you to extra information or to other Web sites of interest. The hyperlinks give you access to documents such as national evaluation reports, platforms of demands, etc., put out by participating groups in different parts of the world or by national coordinating bodies.

The multimedia version of Women on the March also contains numerous extra visual elements (185 photos, 200 images), for example, support cards made in different countries as well as some 30 video clips, many of them on national marches. To make seeing the clips more accessible, they can be viewed at two different resolutions, high and low, the latter being faster to download.

The Web version is designed to allow for different ways of viewing the report.

A short, efficient menu is located on the left-hand side of each Web page. By clicking on one of the words Contents / Introduction / Herstory /Demands / Actions / How we said it / Region /To be continued / Sources, you will be able to access the various sections of the report.

In addition to moving from section to section using the menu, you will find a general table of contents.
Each section, moreover, has its own contents, whereby you can jump from one section to another and one text to another.

You can also read the document as though it were a book, thanks to the forward / back arrows at the bottom of each Web page.

You can find anything of special interest to you in the contents of the report simply by clicking on the words Recherche / Search / Buscar.

You can change to another of the three languages in which the report is written at any time by clicking on one of the following: Français / English / Español.

We are very proud of Women on the March. Focus on the Actions and Demands of the World March of Women, and we are delighted to share it with you since it tells the story of the March that belongs to all of us.
