The World March of Women in the anti-NATO Summit in Strasbourg (April 2009)

■ ■ ■
10 000... 20 000... more? We will never know how many people came forward in Strasbourg against NATO since thousands of demonstrators were prevented or deterred to arrive at the meeting point to protest for peace and disarmament due to the harassment strategy adopted by the police.

A violent police, with a real and effective weapons super dimensioned, constantly sending gas and firing flashballs in the middle of the parade, injuring and panic number of demonstrators and protesters making impossible to escape. A commission of inquiry is required by the organizers and a cyber petition has been launched on the internet.

World March of Women activists have also been afraid many times but does not regret being there because we fully support the reasons for the mobilization. One of the main themes of our future World March of Women 2010 action will be that of peace and demilitarization.

In addition, the International Conference of Friday and Sunday, carried out very far from the city center and transport, was very interesting and well organized, allowing more than 800 people from 25 countries participate in several meetings and workshops. There was not enough time to talk about the result of this mobilization that enabled a large number of anti-war movements, associations, political parties and trade unions to work together in very good conditions. We think and we hope that this continues.

The presence of the World March of Women

French, English and Macedonian activists of the WMW attended the three days of mobilization. We were five at the conferences and more at the demonstration where we joined Women in Black, WILPF, Femmes Solidaires and the Femmes Egalité.

We participated in the workshop "No to NATO, No to War - NATO = Security?  Gender Issues", organized by Women in Black and WILPF (Women's International League for Peace and Freedom). Fifty women were present.

Twelve texts were sent in advance by several women's associations: http://www.wloe.org/Women-say-No-to-NATO.549.0.htm. Organizers have extracted four key themes; each one of them has been the subject of an intervention followed by a debate. We then divided into four working groups to discuss futureperspectives and the World March of Women was able to propose the mobilization of 2010.

This workshop and the event was an opportunity to better know and appreciate activists linked to the organisations with which we wish to mobilize in the 2010 action.

We also distributed 1000 leaflets explaining our 2010 mobilisation.
