National News Flashes - Greece
Enough is enough with the greek "sacred cow" of crazy armaments
Protest against the outrageous war expenditure

65 years since the end of World War II the wars and the occupations continue
The war expenditure is too high
In the 65-year anniversary of the end of the Second World War, humanity is not closer to peace, since dozens of wars take place across the planet, while arms sales worldwide increased by 21% over the last five years.
While the austerity measures of the government, the International Monetary Fund and the European Union take nightmare dimensions, condemning millions of people, especially us women, to poverty, unemployment, exclusion and constant stress; at this very time of the greatest crisis, small Greece has a grievous record in Europe: It is first in military spending!
Greece occupies the fifth position in the world in the import of weaponry and the 13th position in war expenditure in proportion to GDP, while this year of harsh austerity for the labouring classes, Greece will pay 10 billion Euros for armaments and another 500 million Euros for the Greek missions abroad, namely the occupations. Along with this, the commissions and the corruption around the supply of arms and munitions increase the bills and create powerful interest groups to continue the permanent fiesta of war expenditure.
Greece and her neighbour Turkey, are wasting their finances at outrageous military spending. Both governments sacrifice the access of our people, especially of women, to employment, housing, education, health, joy of life, in the altar of military industries of major arms dealers, of USA, Germany, France and many others countries, when they buy completely useless and unnecessary rockets, airplanes, submarines and tanks.
Turkey and Greece are the best clients of the merchants of arms! These same merchants of arms who, in collaboration with the two governments and under the authority of the International Monetary Found, cut salaries, pensions, social security and workers rights!
Common sense would dictate now that Greece is in a critical point, this policy of ultra-expensive armaments to be abandoned in the name of other priorities such as the survival of starving pensioners, the protection of the unemployed or the basic support to the increasingly impoverished single-parent families which at least by 90% have a woman-parent.
But enough is enough with the greek "sacred cow" of crazy armaments that no one dares to touch! We demand:
• To stop the arms race between Greece and Turkey.
To sharply revise downward the armaments programs immediately.
• No participation of Greek forces in missions abroad, such as Afghanistan and Kosovo.
• Investment in public services (health, education, housing, environmental protection, etc.) that we women and the society as a whole need.
• The creation of structures to support women against violence.
Money to combat poverty, which particularly affects women, and not for weapons.
• No to armaments, no to nationalisms.
• Never again fascism, never again war.
