The initiative of the Fédération des femmes du Québec (Canada), the World March of Women saw the light of day in 1996 and rapidly became a major worldwide movement. In the fall of the year 2000 this movement rallied 6000 groups from 161 countries and territories. Millions of women throughout the planet took up the March, and over five million signatures in support of their demands were delivered to the United Nations.
Truly a collective undertaking, the March's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 was an honour that reflected on the whole movement.
The March focussed on and denounced two phenomena that confront women daily: poverty and violence against women. It was successful in showing that worldwide feminist solidarity is possible, that it is experienced everywhere, every day, by all women fighting for the right to vote, access to water, land, health and education; against rape, sexual assault and wife battering; for control of our bodies and sexuality; for equal pay and pay equity; for the recognition of the rights of lesbian, disabled and indigenous women; for equal political participation; for equal sharing of responsibility for child care.
Going beyond the memory of the World March of Women in the Year 2000, this work focusses on the future through the actions, demands, gains and hopes of the women who marched.
Women on the March is the reflection of a movement, a call for solidarity in the struggle for change-a movement here to stay.
